The Treasure of Railroad Bill
In the 1890s there was a famous train robber named Railroad Bill. His real name was Morris Slater. He robbed trains for about 6 years up and down the tracks in Southwestern Alabama. None of the loot that he collected over those years was ever recovered. The legend goes that the cash was buried, possibly in a cave. Railroad Bill was gunned down at Atmore in 1896. The only clue he left behind was that he never strayed far from the railroad tracks between Atmore and Bay Minette.
The Treasure of Henry Nunez
Henry Nunez operated a very profitable ferry during the Civil War, on the Peridido River near where Highway 90 now crosses the river. He died around 1866, but the legend is that he buried more than $100,000 in gold and silver coins. It is presumed to be buried somewhere near where his old ferry landing was or near the ruins of his old house on the Alabama side of the river.
